Brighten Your Smile at Home

Safe and Simple: Teeth Whitening at Home

Achieving a brighter, whiter smile doesn’t have to mean lengthy appointments or complicated treatments. Take‑home teeth whitening offers a convenient, effective way to enhance your smile from the comfort of your own home.

Using professionally supplied whitening kits, this option allows you to gradually lift stains caused by everyday factors such as coffee, tea, red wine, and natural ageing. The process is simple and designed with your comfort and safety in mind.

With consistent use, take‑home whitening can noticeably improve the appearance of your teeth while fitting seamlessly into your daily routine. It’s a gentle, practical solution for anyone looking to refresh their smile at their own pace.

What causes teeth staining?
As we enjoy our lives, certain foods and drinks can stain our teeth. Often, tea, coffee, red wine, certain medications, and smoking are the primary sources of stains. Additionally, with age, the deeper, yellower part, called dentine, becomes thicker, imparting more yellow saturation to the teeth.
How does teeth whitening work?
While most surface stains can be easily removed during hygiene visits through polishing and prophylaxis, the deeper subsurface stains remain and require a whitening product to break them down and remove them.

Hydrogen peroxide or Carbamide peroxide (breaks down into hydrogen peroxide) are two commonly used whitening gels. Hydrogen peroxide diffuses into the tooth and breaks down the staining molecules into smaller bits that washes out.

At-home whitening involves having a custom-made tray into which whitening gel is placed and worn. It allows the whitening gel to sit on the teeth without being washed away by your saliva. Depending on your lifestyle, we recommend a suitable gel that will yield the best results for you.

Doing teeth whitening safely

Before starting whitening, any failing fillings, tooth decay, gum disease and gingival recession must be addressed to avoid harming your gums or teeth.

If you have sensitive teeth, we need to manage that with special toothpaste or gel before whitening.

Any existing crowns, veneers or fillings will not whiten and may need to be replaced.

Our dentist at Berkeley Vale can assess and advise on whether stains from dental trauma, tetracycline, and amalgam restorations may require additional treatments.

Before whitening, surface stains and tartar need to be removed by your dental hygienist or dentist.
