Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS): How It Works

The Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) is a specially designed oral appliance used to help improve breathing during sleep. It is made up of two parts: the upper section, which attaches securely to the upper teeth, and the lower section, which fits onto the lower teeth.

When you wear the MAS at night, it gently pulls your lower jaw forward. This forward movement also brings the tongue forward, which in turn helps to keep the airway open throughout the night. By maintaining this open airway, the MAS allows for better airflow, making it an effective device for people who have problems with snoring or obstructive sleep apnoea.

How MAS Improves Your Sleep

By advancing your jaw, MAS enhances airflow and prevents airway collapse, significantly reducing snoring and apnoeic episodes.

It has been shown to be effective in treating snoring and mild to moderate OSA. For severe OSA patients with difficulty using the CPAP, MAS is often recommended as an alternative option. The outcome of MAS varies among individuals.
